Project 1: Genetic Crossbreed
Creative Brief - Part A
Using Photoshop combine 3-5 animals, using the found images to create 1 new animal, a genetic crossbreed. You are also responsible for naming your animal. Be conscious of how you might use images of your new animal in part B to determine pose, context, and size. Since these images are used as a parody, copyright permission is different. We will discuss this in class.
• Brainstorm and document (thumbnail) possible images & conceptual approaches for the animal
• Although it is possible to adjust to some degree, try to find images that are high quality and CONSISTENT. Check for matched perspective, lighting direction, hue, and even resolution
• You will be presenting your final solutions at fairly large scale... so build your files accordingly (resolution, dpi, size, etc.)
Creative Brief - Part B
Develop a primary purpose for your animal that highlights its unique capabilities or characteristics. Along with the primary image displaying the crossbreed in its “natural” environment from Part A, you will create three promotional items (ads and/or swag), a secondary image, and a vector logo (mark and/or logotype) to announce the arrival of your crossbreed. Be sure to be inventive with the concept. Simply placing a photo and the name of the crossbreed on a computer screen or a magazine cover doesn’t help potential customers understand what to do with this new creature. Use the promotional pieces to educate and entice the viewer. This will be presented as an ADDY board.
• Brainstorm possible formats and conceptual approaches for the promotional materials for your new animal (ads, posters, invitations, billboard, etc.)
• Develop a promotional campaign for your crossbreed and its intended “use” (pet, livestock, working animal, mascot, etc).
• Present your promotional materials in context
• Seek the approval of your instructor before taking your strongest concept to the computer
Learning Objectives
• Continue to develop technical acumen with the core design software (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator)
• Use Photoshop beyond it’s photo-editing capabilities to generate new imagery
• Continue to develop the ability to use visual language and written language in combination in order to persuade an audience
• Continue to develop the ability to transpose a design solution across multiple media/ applications while maintaining a consistent visual language
• Develop the ability to show work in its intended context using digital mock ups
• Begin to develop the ability to generate brand
